Hello! My name is Alex, and I have just finished my first month as the new Digital Marketing Assistant for GML. I’m excited to delve deeper into what GML does, and to not only pursue my individual interests but to discover new skills. Today I’ll be sharing what led me to start working at GML, what I have learnt so far, and what I’m looking forward to tackling in my new role.
I graduated from the University of East Anglia in 2015 with a degree in Film and American Studies. I have always been passionate about writing, design and media production. Since graduating I have worked primarily in customer service and admin roles. Each role I took on required learning new software packages and databases, and I discovered an interest in data analytics. What drew me to the role of Digital Marketing Assistant was the opportunity to utilise technology to problem-solve and devise creative solutions.
My primary responsibility at GML is copywriting. Throughout my time at university, I got to grips with several forms of writing. My work in creative writing and screenwriting led to an interest in video production. As a result of this, I gained experience in writing promotional copy for my own projects, as well as reflective analyses on the creative process. Throughout my degree, one of the most valuable things I have learned is the ability to articulate a point concisely, presenting ideas in a way to engage readers. I have a wide range of interests that I was able to write about in my academic essays, from history and sociology to popular culture and new media.
When I was given the opportunity to write in a professional capacity, I jumped at the chance to pursue something I’m passionate about. Copywriting does however present its own unique challenges. I have been introduced to metadata and Google Keyword planner to optimise my content for search engines. This intersection of web analytics and creativity is a new experience for me, but I’m very much enjoying the learning process and the fresh perspective on creative writing.
Since starting, I have also begun to co-ordinate GML’s social media activity. My goal is not only to promote the work we do here by sharing blog posts and case studies, but also to share learning resources for people interested in branding, technology and design. Social media is a resource all companies should be investing in, it is often the front line of consumer engagement, and a great opportunity to represent a company. What I have learnt is that people engage with individual social media platforms differently, and therefore my posts need to be tailored to suit that particular platform. For example, I mainly share video content on Facebook, having gauged the success of organisations such as Buzzfeed with promoting their video content.
Having only been at GML for over a month, the encouragement and support I have received from my colleagues has led me to begin thinking about my long-term plans here. I intend to become certified in Google Analytics, so I can begin to work in SEO and PPC advertising. I believe that learning more about branding and ecommerce will help me begin to write original content for our blog. Finally, having always been passionate about film and cinematography, I would love to expand into video marketing. I am very pleased to have got off to a great start here at GML, and I look forward to the potential opportunities the future will bring.
