The plan: beam internet to remote parts of the world with helium balloons that will circle the world on stratospheric winds.
After 3 years of development, Google will be testing 20 internet balloons in Queensland, Australia. It’s the latest step for the Google X team working on Project Loon. The balloons carry antennas that can beam 4G-like signals to people below.
Google’s goal is to have a selection of balloons circling earth, bringing internet to people who are currently without it. If it works the technology could be particularly interesting to developing countries as it will be cheaper than lying underground fibre cabling.
The Google X team are also working on Google Glass and driverless cars, what will they come up with next?
